The BMW i8 is a 2+2 seats plug-in hybrid under development by BMW. The BMW i8 is part of a new brand, the "Project i", and it will be the first model available from 2013. This concept car is a plug-in hybrid with a 1.5 liter three cylinder turbodiesel engine producing 220hp and 300Nm of torque. Additionally, there are two electric motors with 139hp. The result is a combined output of 349hp. It allows an acceleration 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. All four wheels provide regenerative braking. The estimated all-electic range is 50 km and the 24-litre diesel tank extends the total vehicle range to up to 700 km. The lightweight chassis is made mainly from aluminium. The windshield, top, doors and fenders are made from polycarbonate glass, with the body having a drag coefficient of 0.22. Under normal driving conditions the i8 is expected to deliver 2.9 l/100 km under the European cycle. A full charge of the battery will take less than 2 hours using 220V. La BMW i8 è un'auto a 2+2 posti ibrida plug-in sotto sviluppo della BMW. Essa fa parte di un nuovo marchio, il "progetto i", e sarà il primo modello in vendita dal 2013. Questa concept car è un'ibrida plug-in con un motore tre cilindri turbodiesel 1,5l che sviluppa 220cv e 300Nm di coppia, abbinato a due motori elettrici da 139cv. Il risultato è una potenza complessiva di 349cv. Questo permette un'accelerazione da 0 a 100km/h in 4,8s e una velocità massima di 250km/h limitata elettronicamente. Le quattro ruote hanno la frenata rigenerativa. L'autonomia stimata in elettrico è 50km e il serbatoio di gasolio da 24 litri estende l'autonomia a oltre 700km. Il telaio è realizzato principalmente di alluminio. Tetto, parabrezza, portiere e parafanghi sono realizzati in vetro e policarbonato con il corpo avente un coefficiente di resistenza aerodinamica di 0,22. La BMW dichiara un consumo medio di 2,9 l/100km per ciclo extraurbano europeo. Una ricarica completa delle batterie dura meno di due ore con la 220V. La i8 costerà più di 100.000euro.
